Quali liste usa?

Quella predefinita è StevenBlack/hosts (licenza MIT).

macOS 15 e successivi.

What exactly does it do?

When a site or app wants to connect to an address (say an ad server), it first asks DNS to translate the name into numbers. Cleanwire checks that name: if it's in an advertising, tracker or malware list (or one of your rules), it answers “doesn't exist” (0.0.0.0) and the connection never starts.

How is it different from a browser ad blocker?

A browser blocker works only in that browser and can hide page elements. This works across the whole Mac, apps included, but blocks whole domains: it can't remove an ad served from the site's own domain. You can use both together.

Why does macOS ask me to approve an extension?

The filter is an Apple system extension (DNS proxy): macOS wants your confirmation and password to turn it on. It's only needed the first time.

A site stopped working

Open the Log, find the blocked domain and choose “Allow this domain”. For a quick test, use pause from the menu bar (5, 15 or 60 minutes).

Does it slow down the internet?

Answers already known come from the cache in under a millisecond; for the rest it depends on your DNS, as before.

How do I remove it completely?

In the System section press “Turn off and remove proxy” then “Uninstall extension”, then drag the app to the Trash. Your Mac's DNS goes back to how it was; macOS may ask for a restart to finish removal.

Does it work with VPNs and network DNS?

It's designed to coexist with them: allowed requests go to the DNS your Mac already used. We tested it with Tailscale. If a VPN forces its own DNS in a way that bypasses the system, those requests may not pass through the filter.

Does it protect my iPhone, TV and consoles?

No: it protects the Mac it is installed on.

Why doesn't it block YouTube ads?

Video ads come from the same addresses as the videos: blocking them would block the video. It's a limit of any DNS filter.

Which lists does it use?

The default is StevenBlack/hosts (MIT license). You can add other public lists or write your own rules.

How many Macs can I use with one key?

One key works on 2 Macs. You activate it in the app by pasting the key you receive by e-mail after purchase; to move it to another Mac, write to us.

Which macOS versions are supported?

macOS 15 and later.
